OB活躍レポートでは、そんな卒業生を皆さんにご紹介していきます。

小舘さんに聞きました！
1. 小舘さんがデザイナーを志したきっかけは何でしたか?
当時は、広告ブームのはしりの頃。コピーライターでは糸井重里、仲畑貴志、秋山晶、デザイナーでは、亀倉雄作、田中一光、永井一正などといった錚々たるクリエイター達が、現役バリバリで活躍していました。そんな流行りに乗っかって、美術が好きだった自分も、グラフィックデザイナーなんてちょっとかっこ良いかも・・・という軽い気持ちで飛び込んでみました。
2. 日本デザイナー学院を選んだ理由は何でしたか?
まず、青山というロケーションの良さに魅かれました。（当時は青山に校舎があったのです）渋谷にも原宿にも歩いて行けるし、青山学院大学の学食に行けばランチも安いし、いろいろなメリットがあったのです。また、校風が明るくのびのびと自由なイメージがあったので、この学校に決めたのだと思います。
3. 学生時代の思い出は?
提出するための課題制作に、毎日追われていた記憶が強いです。当時はけっこう大変だったのでしょうが、今にして思えば大したことない苦労だったかな・・・と感じます。
楽しかった思い出は、エアブラシを持っていなかったので友人宅に借りに行き、そのまま飲んだくれたりとか・・・ディスコを借りきってパーティを開いたりとか・・・朝から辻堂あたりでサーフィンをやって午後の授業から出たりとか・・・。思い返せば楽しい学生生活ばかりでした。ちなみにその頃の仲間とは、今でも仲良しですよ。
4. 卒業後始めについた仕事は、そして会社はどんなところでしたか?
在学中に、新宿御苑前にあったセールスプロモーションを得意とする広告プロダクションに内定をもらうことができました。入社してすぐ、SPツールのパンフレットなどのデザインを任せられて、けっこう往生した記憶があります。「デザインする」とは「レイアウトすること」程度の認識だった自分は、内容も考えなければならない難しさをこの時はじめて知りました。
世はバブル経済のまっただ中。印刷媒体の依頼はうなぎ登り。毎日、最終電車で帰る日々が続いたつらい記憶もありますが、この頃に、様々なジャンルのデザインを次から次へとやらせてもらったおかげで、今の自分があるのだと感じています。
商業デザインとは「クライアントの想いを、消費者に分かりやすく伝えるための表現」という事を意識しながら仕事をするようになったのも、この頃だと思います。なんて、今もまだ勉強中の身ですが・・・
5. その後どんなふうに仕事を続けてこられましたか?
8年間務めた後に、フリーランスのデザイナーとして独立しました。マンションを１部屋借り、機材一式買いそろえて事務所を開設したのです。始めは不安でしたが、1カ月もするとその不安は解消。次から次へと仕事が舞い込んで来るのです。（小さな仕事がほとんどですが）一度に15の案件を同時進行なんてこともよくありました。（今ではありえませんが・・・）
フリーランスの良い点は、仕事のペース配分を自分で決められること。納期をきちんと守れば、それまでの時間の使い方は自由なのです。また、やった仕事のほとんどが自分の収入に反映されるので、徹夜作業が続いてもそんなに苦ではないのです。ただし仕事がなければ、それも収入に反映されますよ。
悪い点は、365日が仕事モードになってしまうことです。どこにいても、仕事スイッチをオフにできない辛さがあります。これは、フリーランスを選んだ人には、ついて回る職業病と言っていいでしょう。
6. 今回ご紹介頂いた受賞作品を手がけることになったきっかけは?
10年ほど前に、TAKENAKAの広告をディレクションしている人物と知りあい、やってみないかと誘われてチームに入れてもらいました。それ以来、TAKENAKAの広告やパンフレットのデザインを手伝わせてもらっています。
今もつくづく感じますが、人との出会いが、人生を左右するということ。言い換えれば「人生とは、人との出会いから始まる」「出会いがなければ、人生はつまらない」ということなんです。
7. 受賞の決めては何でしょう?
それは、ひとことでは言えませんが、広告表現は、クライアントが消費者に伝えたいことをストレートに現わすのではなく、ちょっとひねりを加えたり、変わった視点からアプローチするとおもしろくなる。今回はそれがたまたま上手くいったのだと思います。
8.現在の学生にアドバイスをお願いします。
常に人と違うことをやってやろう、と思う気持ちが大事です。とはいうものの、もうやり尽くされた感があるデザイン業界です。始めからオリジナリティあるものを作りたい、といってもなかなか難しいと思います。先輩たちの良い作品やアートをいっぱい見て、それを参考にデザインしていくうちに、だんだんと自分のオリジナリティが生まれて来るものです。
それと、先に言いましたが、いろんな人と出会うことが大切です。すべての人を否定しないで受け入れて、友達をいっぱい作ったもん勝ちです。
